About Us
Serafinas Park and Gardens and Pamapuria store is a unique Far North destination.
The proud owners are Murray and Serafina Lay. Their sons Jordan and James help with the business during their school
holidays.
The family maintain their gardens well and it shows.
The gardens consist of lots of flowering plants and many roses. There is also a small banana
plantation. They grow a lot of different types of fruit such as plums, apples, oranges, mandarins, tangelos, tamarillos,
limes, lemons, feijoas and beautiful creamy avocados.
At most times of the year there are fruits ready to be picked and eaten. Campervan visitors
are welcome to try fruit while staying in the gardens. There is also generally a lot of different vegetables growing.
These in particular include Maori potato, kumara, garlic, herbs, tomatoes, beans and chard (silver beet).
The Lay family grow most of their own herbs for use in their restaurant.
History
Murray comes from a sales background and worked for many years through the entire Pacific and most of the islands
within the region. Having had the very good fortune to meet Serafina in Samoa, the two married and lived in Samoa
where their two sons were born.
Having always enjoyed home made preserves, relish, pickles and chutneys,
they established their own small sauce making factory in Apia. Having high quality fruit and vegetables and nearly
all organically grown, there couldn't have been a better place to start a business like this.
The speciality was chilli sauce and a relish using lashings of fresh sweet papaya. Our brand name was named simply "TROPIC".
As the boys were getting older they decided that it would be a good idea for the boys to have the opportunity of a quality
education here in New Zealand and relocated to Auckland for several years before buying the property in the Far North.
This became the familys opportunity to do some of the things that had been their dream. The rest is history, and continues today.
Future
Serafina and Murray eventually intend to grow most of their own herbs and a lot of the vegetable for their dining room
and functions. There is a plan in place to establish Serafinas Park and Gardens as a premium wedding venue, as well as
for private functions.
Planned is to re-establish their own relish, pickle and sauce company. It is intended to make these from
fresh home grown fruit and produce. The family want to set this up in such a way that public and visitors can observe the
products being made and to do sampling at the same time. The biggest aspect of this is the 'Fresh is Best' theory.
In their eyes it doesn't come fresher than picked the same day.
